I’ve been shooting snow scene in Tokyo【2022/01/06】

Happy new year.

It snowed in Tokyo on 1/6(Japan time). It is the first time in 4 years that heavy snow has fallen in Tokyo.

I went to Asakusa and photographed the snowy scenery of Tokyo.

About 10cm of snow has piled up

The maximum temperature on this day (1/6) was 2.6 ℃, which was a very cold day.

↓A lot of snow is piled up on the bicycle

↓The rickshaw in Asakusa looked like it was hard because of the snow. In Asakusa, you can enjoy sightseeing in a rickshaw. A rickshaw costs 4000 yen (about $ 40) for two people.

Snow scene of Kaminarimon in Asakusa

It was snowing so there weren’t many tourists.

↓The image below was taken in the summer of 2019. In 2019, it was crowded with many tourists.(https://stadyplus.com/ueno-asakusa/)

↓I shot the area around Kaminarimon.

Nakamise Street

Many stores were closed due to the influence of snow.

↓This is a picture of Nakamise Street before the start of COVID-19 pandemic.

↓Despite the New Year, there were few people due to the influence of snow.

↓There were few people except Sensoji Temple.

Sensoji Temple

Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo built in 628. It is also famous as a power spot.

↓It is a five-storied pagoda. It is covered with snow and looks unusual.

↓It is the precincts.

↓The road leading from the precincts to the exit was covered with a lot of snow.

Access to Sensoji Temple

Take the A1 exit of Asakusa Station and continue straight ahead to reach Kaminarimon. If you enter from Kaminarimon and go straight on Nakamise Street, you will reach Sensoji Temple. Asakusa Station on the Tsukuba Express is far from Sensoji Temple, so I don`t recommend it.

Other Tokyo snow scenes

I didn’t go except Asakusa, but Japanese TV news reported about the snowy landscape of Tokyo.

To be honest, I didn’t want to go anywhere other than Asakusa because it was too cold.

Tokyo Station

The snowstorm was so bad that the visibility was very poor.

Shibuya

There was no snow near Shibuya station. It seems that snow was being removed.

Shinjuku

It seems that snow was removed in Shinjuku as well.

Ueno

This photo was taken by a friend of mine. The area around Ueno station was covered with snow so much that I couldn’t walk. It seems that snow removal work was not done.

Impact on traffic

The train was operating normally, but 108 domestic flights were canceled.

Observed 16 cm of snow in 1998

According to Japanese television news, 16cm of snow was observed on January 10, 1998.
